Menopause
Menopause
is, by definition, 12 months without a period. The average age of
menopause is 50, but women can experience menopause sooner. Women
also experience symptoms of hormone changes in the years prior to
menopause, called the peri-menopausal period.
For
some women, the symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause
are minimal. Their periods just stop. For others, they
can experience a long list of distracting and sometimes
debilitating symptoms. Hot flashes, when the body feels
very hot, flushed and sweaty, usually from the chest
up, are the hallmark of the lowered estrogen levels
of peri-menopause. For some women, this can interrupt
sleep and cause fatigue and moodiness. Changes in sexual
desire and response may accompany menopause. Headache,
bone ache, irritability, and depression are other symptoms
women have noted.
Treatment
for menopause is not necessary, but there are many ways
of providing symptomatic relief.
Hormone replacement therapy
Healthy lifestyle
changes: diet and exercise
Avoiding excess tobacco and caffeine
Be
